We are so excited about our Retreat this year. We have brought together women of many talents to help us remember that birth and being a doula is not just work, it is also play!
We have a great lineup for this years UDA Retreat, including a belly cast demo and massage. And, as we all know, nothing is better for the soul, and your emotional health as a good laugh. We will be reading the Vagina Monologues, and if you haven’t heard this before, it will leave you wanting
more.
Join your doula community in closet-swap: Bring up to 10 items of clothing, self-care items (new lotions, body scrubs, hair products), jewelry, belts, scarves, etc. Bring fantastic items you no longer need but want to give to a friend)! You could also bring birthing items.

Farmer’s Market in SLC on October 8th
Hey fellow doulas, we have a booth at the Farmer’s Market on October 8th from 7:30 am until 1:30 pm. We need volunteers to help man the booth. This is a great opportunity to promote doulas in general, but also to promote YOU!
We are a great community of women, working for women. The farmer’s market is a great opportunity to connect with local moms and dads and share your passion for birth.

Annual UDA Family Picnic
Well, it is that wonderful time again. The warm summer breeze, the longer nights, and of course, the annual UDA family picnic. This year the picnic is on Thursday August 11th at 5:30. It will be at the Parleys Creek Pavilion at Sugarhouse Park. Any one attending, please bring a potluck item to share. The UDA will provide drinks and paper products.
This is a great time to reconnect with old friends, and come make a few new ones. This event is open to all UDA members and their family.
Doula officially entered into the Oxford English Dictionary
Every month, the Oxford English Dictionary adds new words. In June, doula (noun) was one of the new words added.
In case you are curious how they decide what to add:
The OED requires several independent examples of the word being used, and also evidence that the word has been in use for a reasonable amount of time. The exact time-span and number of examples may vary: for instance, one word may be included on the evidence of only a few examples, spread out over a long period of time, while another may gather momentum very quickly, resulting in a wide range of evidence in a shorter space of time. We also look for the word to reach a level of general currency where it is unselfconsciously used with the expectation of being understood: that is, we look for examples of uses of a word that are not immediately followed by an explanation of its meaning for the benefit of the reader. We have a large range of words under constant review, and as items are assessed for inclusion in the dictionary, words which have not yet accumulated enough evidence are kept on file, so that we can refer back to them if further evidence comes to light.
Just goes to show that the role of doulas is gaining popularity!
A Postpartum doula
A postpartum doula helps new parents transition into parenthood in the comforts of their own home. She can help with infant care, light housekeeping, meal preparation breastfeeding support, care of other children.
Positive Birth
The day you give birth should be an amazing day, filled with wonderful memories you will want to cherish forever. Our society often teaches us that birth is terrifying and negative. It doesn’t have to be! With a doula birth can be exhilarating, positive, empowering, even fun!
A Birth Doula
A birth doula is a trained continuous labor and birth support person for a mom and her partner. She will help prepare the couple in many ways. *birth preferences *optimal fetal positioning *comfort measures *relaxation *what to expect in the hospital *advocacy
