Dr. Shoshana Bennett

As a world renowned maternal mental health expert, Dr. Shoshana Bennett speaks not only from personal experience but years of research and her upbeat and relatable presentation style makes her a favorite wherever she goes. This interactive workshop will provide an in-depth understanding of the six perinatal mood and anxiety disorders. Affectionately known as “Dr. Shosh”, Shoshana will also address symptoms to watch and listen for and provide tips for developing and implementing a wellness strategy to assist families to cope with these disorders. Those in attendance will receive a 2.5 hr. Perinatal Mood and Anxiety Disorders Training Certificate.

Dr. Shoshana’s keynote specifically addresses doulas and care providers, educating them on how to approach parents with this information and how to guide them to professional help if needed. Providing these practical tips and strategies to those in your care can make the difference between health and clinical disorders.

In this session, experienced marketer Joe Staples will cover five things doulas can do (without spending a lot of money) to effectively market their services. These include establishing your personal brand, using storytelling as a marketing tool, developing good client testimonials, leveraging influencers as referral sources, and the importance of differentiation. Join Joe for a lively, interactive session that will include Q&A and group discussion.

Join our providers panel for a discussion on building relationships in the birth room when emotions run hot, stakes are high, and open communication is most crucial. Our panelists are well seasoned in their profession, support the doula role, and provide insight about how doulas can increase their value to the birth team.

Bring your questions and receive tools to increase your professional presence in the birth space, improve your communication, and build your value and confidence with providers. Differentiate yourself as a preferred doula that providers refer to their clients.

Nitrous Oxide as a Labor Analgesic
Danica Loveridge

What is Nitrous Oxide and how does it work? Join Danica Loveridge, Certified Nurse Midwife and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner to answer these questions and much more. During this session, Danica will review a brief history of Nitrous Oxide and theories around why it fell out of favor in the US. She was an advocate for implementing the use of Nitrous Oxide as a labor analgesic at the University of Utah Medical Center, she will discuss the implementation, protocol, administration and efficacy as well as the UUMC staff response to the implementation. Additionally, Danica will discuss safety concerns for mom, fetus and staff, stages of labor Nitrous Oxide is most commonly used for and it’s effectiveness, and mothers’ experiences who have used it during labor.

Have you ever wanted a few minutes to pick the brain of a lawyer? In this session, Jonathan will answer your questions regarding Doula Client Contracts, Service Agreements, and Liability Waivers. Learn what to include and what to leave out of your contracts and agreements. Plan to bring your current contract so you can formulate specific questions and make revisions throughout the session.

Pelvic Floor Breakout Session:
Know Your Core: Healing your Abdominal Wall and Pelvic Floor
Susan Mclaughlin

Join Physical Therapist and Pelvic Floor specialist, Susan McLaughlin, in this breakout session and get to Know Your Core and how to bring your abdominal wall and pelvic floor back into balance and optimal function, specifically postpartum. This session will provide practical tips and exercises to educate your clients and assist them to have a healthy birth and postpartum recovery. During this session you will learn how the head & neck, ribcage and pelvis are connected and how core stability requires the contribution between alignment, the pressure system, the muscle system, the nervous system and breath mechanics.

Susan will also discuss how stress, muscle tension and increased pressures affect the function of the core and how this plays out during birth and postpartum, as well as how the diaphragm, abdominal and pelvic floor muscles work together as a team.
